How to Organise your Home and Cut Back on Clutter / House Cleaning

When it comes to keeping your house clean, having a well-organised home that’s free of clutter is just as important as keeping it free of dust and grime harbouring nasty germs and bacteria!

Not only is your home more welcoming for guests when it’s clear of clutter and mess, but it also means you have more space to live in.

Removing clutter from your home can also be very therapeutic, but for some, this house cleaning process is not always so easy.

If there’s too much clutter around your house, here’s how to get rid of it and turn your home into a well-organised oasis during your domestic cleaning.

Common Rooms to De-Clutter

The bathroom and the wardrobe are the most common culprits for clutter hoarding, so these will be the two key areas we will focus on in our blog today.

From an endless barrage of beauty, shower and hair products in the bathroom to an ever-expanding wardrobe filled with clothes from every season and every fashion trend, these two areas are a great place to start your de-cluttering journey.

However, these aren’t the only areas you should be focusing on. Other rooms in your house also need a regular de-clutter such as children’s bedrooms, garages and home offices.

If table tops and shelves are littered with items and drawers are choked with knick-knacks, you know it’s time to get that clutter sorted. Although each room, space and item is different, whatever you’re trying to de-clutter, the process is pretty much the same.

Choosing Which Items to Throw Away

When deciding which items to keep and which ones to throw away, we like the Four Box Method.

More often than not, de-cluttering is put off because you don’t know what to do with your excess items, but this method forces you to make a decision about each piece.

All four boxes should be labelled as follows

• Pay Away

• Give Away / Sell

• Storage

• Trash

Bring these boxes with you to any area of your home you’re decluttering. By having the options right there in front of you, it’s much easier to make a decision about the fate of each item you remove.

This method can be used for both large and small decluttering jobs, from simply clearing clutter from a shelf to decluttering the entire house.

Introducing Organisation into Your Home

When it’s time to return items you wish to keep back to where they belong, make sure you include a bit more organisation this time around so you can find the items you need much easier.

Organising your Bathroom

When putting all your must-have items back in your bathroom, try to keep similar items together and essentials you use every day within arm’s reach.

For example, your top drawers for toothbrushes and toothpaste, shelves for face cream and shower racks for soap and shampoo. Place any items you don’t use often in the closet under the sink.

We also recommend including some tidy trays in your bathroom drawers so all of your smaller items can be easily segregated, preventing them from rolling around in your drawers. For larger items such as toilet rolls and wash products, place them in storage bins.

Organising your Wardrobe

When putting clothes back in your drawers, fold each piece of clothing neatly and allocate a drawer to a different type or style of clothing.

Socks and underwear should be placed in their own, smaller drawers. The larger top drawer of your chest of drawers can be for your tops or t-shirts, the next drawer down for your pants and skirts, and the bottom drawer can be for jumpers or other types of clothing.

Same goes for hanging up clothes in your wardrobe. Keep each type of clothing grouped together, with jackets followed by tops and then by dresses for example.

Your goal here is to know exactly where every clothing type is and you know where to find them.

Keeping Your Home Clutter-Free

Once your house is clutter-free, you want to make sure it stays that way!

The ultimate cure for a cluttered house is to keep those things out of your home in the first place. It’s so easy to be tempted into buying things just because they’re on sale or because you might need to use it one day – but think before you buy!

If it’s an item you do need, think about where you are going to put it and if there is a space available in your home to store it.
