Tips for cleaning bedrooms
- One of the most focal points of any bedroom is, of course, the bed! Taking the extra time to make your bed neatly can have an amazing presence in the rest of the room.
Straighten out the fabric with an open palm, fluff up the pillows, and tuck the bottom sheet tightly under your mattress. These few extra minutes when making your bed helps the entire room seem much cleaner.
- When needing extra space to store items, under the bed is always a popular choice. The important thing to remember is to never hide clutter under this hiding space, but rather have it organise in some form of storage.
This will also allow for easy retrieval – common laundry baskets/make for fantastic storing solutions/ in these instances. Or plastic boxes with lids available at all cheap-as-chips stores
- Do a sweep of each bedroom looking over all the items and objects in the room. If any of these items does not belong where they currently sit make two clear piles, relocation or rubbish.
After you have moved through each bedroom any objects in the relocation pile can be moved to rightful locations. If you have to think hard of where the item should be repositioned, put it in the rubbish pile instead.

Cleaning The Kitchen
The kitchen is notoriously known as painstakingly long to clean, but efficient planning can make the task much easier. Work around your kitchen following the order and the task will become much more manageable:
Sink: First, stack all dirty dishes to the side or into the dishwater . Fill the sink with hot water containing some detergent and soak any dirty dishes, pots and pans while you continue cleaning.
Wipe the sink with any spray and wipe product made to cup grease and rinse well.
Ensure a spotless finish for stainless steel sinks by buffing the surface with a few drops of mineral oil on a soft cloth.
For tougher stains try a few sprays of vinegar while the baking soda is setting, giving your sink a thorough cleanse. To disinfect, start with warm water and soap giving the area an initial rinse before using disinfectant or for a DIY solution the following: a one-two combination of spraying vinegar, followed by a spray of hydrogen peroxide, before letting it air dry.
Benches and Counters: With the clutter cleared away and benches cleared feel free to use that space as you move along wiping down your kitchen benches, counters and tables. A microfiber cloth is perfect for this process, especially instead of paper towels as they are simply more efficient and economical in the long run.
Eucalyptus oil can be a great alternative to regular cleaning products to remove bad odours.
Fridge: Bring the bin or a bag next to the bin and start purging all items that have been long forgotten in the fridge. With food clutter, removed, it will be easier to take out glass shelves and containers to wipe over.
Bi-carb soda left in the side compartment of your fridge is excellent at absorbing smells and odours.
Oven and Stove top: As some of the dirtiest appliances in the kitchen, it is best to tackle the oven first by turning it on to warm. Start by removing he racks from the oven and stove top and liberally applying a paste of baking soda and water to the walls, racks and floor of the oven and the stove top. Alternatively, you can use a commercial oven spray on the oven and spray and wipe on the stove top.
Let the mixture set for a few hours, and then use a damp cloth to wipe down and watch the grease fall off.

Bathroom Cleaning
Cleaning your bathroom does not need to be difficult if you break it down into three main areas – shower and bath, toilet and vanity.
Shower and bath: Lemon oil is a little secret that can be used on shower glass to repel water of the surface keeping it streak free. Investing in a squeegee and using that every few days after you shower will also assist keeping the glass clean. Also, do not be afraid to throw the shower curtain in the washing machine with a few towels when it needs attention.
To remove grime and bacteria from the showerhead, fill a bag with white vinegar and tie it around fully submerging the head. Leave it overnight and rinse it in the morning and watch the soap scum come out.
Believe it or not washing powder with warm water can be highly effective removing stains from your bathtub. Pour boiling water down your drain to help clean and sanitise the drainage system.
Toilet: Pour a substance which has citric acid in it (you can even use cola, tang or other citric mixture or substance) into the bowl of your toilet, give it about an hour, and then flush. The acid in these products helps breaks down stains. Chlorine bleach can also be used to clean and disinfect the toilet bowl – use quarter of a cup, wait a few minutes and flush.
Vanity: Vinegar and warm water removes soap scum and makes vanity mirrors shine. You can help stop those mirrors fogging as well by using a little liquid soap and rubbing thoroughly. Toothpaste is also a little-known trick to making stainless steel taps shiny.

Quick Overall House Cleaning Pointers
- Cleaning and sweeping should be done top from bottom – that way your floors have a better chance of staying clean.
- If you have polished floors, make sure you have a suitable mop and bucket to do a good job. Some mops are very difficult to wring out adequately and leave too much water on the floor. This will leave a streaky effect when the floor dries.
- Methylated spirits or white vinegar in very hot water is fantastic at cleaning your polished floors.
- Bay leaves can be used to ward of insects – very useful for ant invasions!
- Before cleaning, have labelled, empty containers ready to place miscellaneous items. This will allow to keep working without having to stop in order to move items.
