The Simple Steps for House Cleaning: Part 3 – The Bathroom

The bathroom should be one of the cleanest places in the house since it’s the room where we spend our time keeping ourselves clean. It should be a place of tranquillity, not a space full of clutter, mould and dust.

Like every other room in the house, a process should be followed to get your bathroom cleaned faster and to make sure it’s left in pristine condition.

Clear the Clutter

Before you get started on cleaning your bathroom, you need to remove all items and clutter from your countertops, shelves and shower. Same goes for clothes you have left on the floor – remove these items from the room completely so all surfaces are clear and ready to be cleaned.

The Shower and Bathtub

The shower and bathtub should be your first point of call. Use a bathroom cleaner specifically suited to removing soap scum and mildew, and liberally spray it over the bathtub and shower. Don’t forget to spray and clean the shower head also.

Use a cleaner suited for removing calcium, rust and lime to clean your fixtures. Rinse out the shower and bathtub well with hot water and dry with a towel.

If you have shower curtains, throw them into the washing machine with some regular detergent and old towels. Towels will help scrub any excess soap scum and mildew from your shower curtains as they are cleaned in your washing machine.

Shelves, Counter Tops, Sink and Mirror

Next step is to grab your duster to remove any dust and dirt from surfaces and spaces, making them ready to be wiped down.

Use bathroom cleaner to spray the sink and counter, and rub the surface and sink liberally with a damp cloth, rinsing your cloth thoroughly in the sink as you go. Once your sink is pristine, use bleach on an old toothbrush to remove any excess junk or grime from between handles and taps.

Use a regular household cleaning product to clean your mirror or you could use glass cleaner such as Windex to give your mirror the perfect reflective shine. Use either a towel or squeegee to rinse and wipe the excessive water and liquid from the mirror’s face until it is dry and squeaky clean.

The Toilet

Pour bleach into your toilet bowl or coat the inside of the bowl with traditional toilet cleaner and allow it to cover the entire toilet bowl. Leave the cleaning liquid in the bowl for at least half an hour before scrubbing.

The bleach or toilet cleaner should dissolve the mess, meaning that little scrubbing will be needed. Once the toilet is scrubbed with a toilet brush, flush the toilet to finish the job.

To clean the outside of your toilet, soak a cloth in disinfectant cleaner and proceed to wipe the toilet’s surface. Make sure you remember to wipe down the underside of the seat lid and the hinges. Throw out the cloth after cleaning and do not use it to clean any other surface.

Remove Mould

Damp bathrooms create the perfect environment for mould to grow on your walls, ceiling and in between the cracks in your tiles. You can purchase mould remover or spray water and bleach solution on the mould to remove it.

Let the cleaning solution rest for a couple of minutes before using a clean rag or sponge to scrub the mould off the surface. Make sure all excess chemicals are rinsed off and the surface is dried after cleaning.

Clean the Floor

After your surfaces, shower, bathtub and toilet have been cleaned, finish up by cleaning your floor. Firstly, use a broom to sweep up any dust and debris and then use a mop and bucket of hot soapy water to clean the floor until it is sparkling clean. Don’t forget to mop around hard to reach areas such as the toilet.
